Protecting your home and family is a very serious topic.  Here are some important home safety tips that will help you keep your home secure.  Follow these steps and use a monitored security alarm system and you will be able to rest easy knowing that your family is safe.  Included are some important statistics to keep in mind as you read these home security tips.

Update your information with the monitoring station and with your family periodically!  Have a family meeting to keep everyone in the home updated on password and pass code changes.  We recommend you change them periodically and keep the monitoring station up to date at all times with this information.  Remember, this information is resting on your shoulders.  Never leave your password or pass codes lying around.  Never associate any pass codes (date of birth, anniversary dates, social security numbers, etc) or passwords (maiden names, pet names, favorite colors, etc).  The first thing a burglar will do is to try to figure this out.

Protect your valuables.  Don't hide valuables in a freezer, cookie jars, or even mattresses!  Those are the first places thieves might look.  Make sure you shred sensitive documents before throwing them in the trash.

Replace broken or cracked windows, they are the easiest way in for a burglar to gain access inside your home.  Stop procrastinating and get them fixed!  Keep valuable items away from a window sight.  It takes only seconds to reach in and grab them.  Use window blinds so that it's hard for people to view inside your home.

Maintain your yard to make it easy for emergency vehicles to find your home, like using large numbers on your house and mailbox.  Never store ladders or step stools near windows of your home.  Don't put your name on your house or mailbox.  Don't hide that spare key on the porch or anywhere someone has probably seen you put it before.  Keep shrubs around windows and doors trimmed.  Keep all entry points to your home well lit by using security motion light kits where applicable.

Taking a vacation?  Most people take a week or two.  Be sure to have your post office hold your mail until you return.  If you have a home phone, forward that number to your cell phone.  Never mention you will be on vacation in your voicemail.  Have a family member or a trustworthy neighbor keep an eye on your house.  Ask them to collect your newspapers, mow the yard and walk around the entire house to check doors and windows.  Use timers for your lights and a couple of lamps used in multiple rooms around the home.  Leave a radio on in a bedroom while you're gone.
